Disappointingly the committee felt it also necessary to break their rules and award half the prize to #thetestaments #margaretatwood 's world building presents a superficial view of how #facism happens and erases/elides the role of white supremacy keeping intact the central place of white women in the literary and #liberatory imagination. It is upsetting the booker judges force the first black women recepient to share space with this middling novel. Congratulations to #bernadineevaristo for winning the #bookerprize2019 She is the first black woman to win since the prizes inception in 1969. In her novel Girl, Woman, Other the committee "says the novelist set out to write in a polyphonic series of voices as a “strategy against invisibility”, because “we black British women know that if we don’t write ourselves into literature, no one else will”. We agree! We all should be reading more Ursula K Le Guin. In this essay from @outline Siobhan Leddy looks at how Le Guin's theory of story telling shifts thinking from one of domination to one of "gathering, holding, and sharing" and how reframing how a story gets told from this perspective open up imaginative possibilities that make it possible to understand our current predicaments of late capitalism and climate change.
